Enable Windows XP Style Cascading “All Programs” List in Windows Vista and 7 Start Menu

When Windows Vista was released by Microsoft, lots of people complained about new Start Menu functionality. The main complaint was the change in display of "All Programs" list in Start Menu. In Windows XP, the "All Programs" list was used to show as a drop-out list which provided users more space to browse through programs list but Microsoft changed this behavior in Windows Vista and the "All Programs" list started showing inside the Start Menu and people found it difficult to browse through programs list in that small space of Start Menu.
The same functionality was carried forward to Windows 7 Start Menu.
Today in this article, we are going to share an excellent and popular freeware which can bring back Windows XP style cascading "All Programs" list in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Start Menu.
We all know about awesome "Classic Shell" software which is a freeware for Windows Vista, 7 and 8. The main use of Classic Shell is to bring back the Classic Start Menu and Classic Windows Explorer features in Windows Vista, 7 and 8.
But did you know this software can also bring back cascading "All Programs" list in Windows Vista and 7 Start Menu? Yes. Its a small and overlooked feature of Classic Shell.
If you don't want to get Classic Start Menu in Windows Vista and 7 using Classic Shell but want to get XP style cascading "All Programs" list, just follow these simple steps:
1. First download and install Classic Shell using following link:
Download Classic Shell
2. After installing, it'll automatically replace default Start Menu with Classic Start Menu. To get default Start Menu back, right-click on Start button and select Settings option.
3. Now select "Windows Start Menu" option in "Left Click opens" section as shown in following screenshot:
Enable_Default_Windows_Start_Menu.png
It'll re-enable default Start Menu for left-click. You can also do the same for "Windows Key opens" section.
4. Now we need to enable cascading feature for "All Programs" list.
Go to "Windows Start Menu" tab and enable "Cascading All Programs menu" option as shown in following screenshot:
Enable_Cascading_All_Programs_List_Start_Menu_Vista_7.png
5. That's it. It'll immediately enable Windows XP style cascading "All Programs" list in Windows Vista and 7 Start Menu and when you'll click on "All Programs" link in Start Menu, it'll open programs list as a drop-out list as shown in following screenshot:
Cascading_All_Programs_List_Start_Menu_Vista_7.png
6. If you want, you can also change the style of cascading "All Programs" list. Again open Classic Start Menu settings window, go to "All Programs Skin" tab and select any desired skin given in the list.
Change_Start_Menu_All_Programs_List_Style.png
We selected "Smoked Glass" skin while testing this feature in our system and we got an excellent look of "All Programs" list after changing the skin. Following is a screenshot of the new look of "All Programs" list in action:

How to Get Mac OS or Linux Style Font Smoothing in Windows?

There is no doubt, Mac OS and Linux font smoothing functionality is better than Windows. The text in Mac or Linux looks better and smooth compared to Windows OS. Mac and Linux fonts are easier to read and easy on eyes than Windows fonts. Although Microsoft introduced Clear Type font smoothing in Windows but sometimes a few new fonts such as Segoe UI become hard to read and look too much sharp on screen.
Wouldn't it be great if we could get Mac and Linux style font smoothing in Windows? Today in this topic, we are going to share 2 free software which can bring Mac and Linux like font smoothing in Windows. These freeware can be considered as a replacement of the default font rendering service in Windows. These software render Windows fonts smoothly which makes them easier to read and look nice on screen.
Both these freeware are based on the good old GDI++ project which was started by a Japanese developer in September 2006 but was suspended very soon in the same month.
Since the development of GDI++ was discontinued by the developer, a few other developers started working on the same source code and released new improved versions of the same FreeType font smoothing functionality which was used by GDI++. These new software provide improved performance and better compatibility for all Windows versions.
So without wasting time, lets share these free software which will help you in making Windows fonts look-like Mac OS and Linux fonts as shown in following image:
Mac_Font_Smoothing_Enabled_in_Windows.png
These 2 freeware are:
  • gdipp
  • mactype
Installation of both software is easy. Simply follow the instructions given by the setup wizard and complete the installation process.
gdipp is easier to use compared to mactype and you don't need to customize any setting in gdipp. It automatically starts its service and brings Mac and Linux like font smoothing in Windows immediately just after the installation.
On the other hand, mactype is highly customizable. It comes with many built-in and pre-configured font smoothing profiles. You can select any of the given profiles or you can also create your own profile. You'll need to give each profile a try as different font profiles will work differently depending upon the computer screen and its resolution.
You can download both of them using following links:
Download gdipp
Download mactype
Both of these software work perfectly in 32-bit and 64-bit Windows editions.

May 31, 2012 is a big day for Microsoft and all Windows users. First Microsoft released free public Release Preview build of Windows 8 and now its turn of Visual Studio and .NET Framework. Microsoft has released Visual Studio 2012 RC and .NET Framework 4.5 RC versions to public.
Visual Studio 2012 RC:
According to Microsoft, "Visual Studio 2012" (previously known as Visual Studio 11) offers an improved developer experience that includes a simplified user interface (Windows 8 Metro UI inspired) designed to keep developers focused on their work, with fewer distractions and easier access to the tools they need.
Microsoft_Visual_Studio.png
Following are some major improvements and new features in Visual Studio 2012:
Reduced toolbar commands: To help free up precious workspace, Microsoft has reduced the number of default commands that show on toolbars in the user interface. These commands can still be accessed through the drop-down menus or added back onto the toolbar if the user wants them, but now the default work area is significantly larger. For example, the cut, copy and paste toolbar commands were removed because research has shown that most developers use the keyboard shortcuts instead.
Simplified graphics: Visual Studio 2012 eliminates the use of color within tools except in cases where color is used for notification or status change purposes. Now, the user interface competes far less with the developer’s content. Other user interface graphics, such as line work and iconography, also have been simplified to be less distracting.
Comprehensive search: Visual Studio 2012 features a comprehensive search capability, allowing developers to quickly find what they are looking for within commands and configuration options, tool windows, and open files.
Workflow hubs: New workflow hubs combine common tasks into one simplified window. Rather than force developers to interact with two or more tool windows to get tasks done, Visual Studio 2012 streamlines common tasks so that many can be accomplished from within a single window.
Preview Tabs: Developers can view the contents of documents using new Preview Tabs, which get reused as the developer works. As a result, developers no longer end up with large numbers of extraneous documents open as a byproduct of common tasks such as debugging or browsing results.
In addition, "Visual Studio 2012" RC also includes support for Windows 8 and Web development, which are supported by Visual Studio Express for Windows 8 and "Visual Studio 2012" Express for Web, respectively.
.NET Framework 4.5 RC:
With .NET Framework 4.5, Microsoft .NET has been enhanced significantly to enable developers to be as productive as possible while building rich, reliable and high-performance software in managed code.
Following are some major improvements in .NET Framework 4.5:
Languages: To help developers deliver responsive clients and scalable servers, the C# and Visual Basic languages now have built-in support for writing asynchronous code almost as easily as if it were synchronous. And to help developers tackle data-complex problems, F# integrates Type Providers to make data access trivial in F# programs and components.
Performance: The Common Language Runtime has been overhauled to provide better performance, in particular for server applications and services. With additions such as background server garbage collection, multicore background JIT compilation and profile-guided optimization, managed applications can now start faster and run with better throughput and lower latency.
Networking: With the proliferation of devices and continuous services in the cloud, .NET Framework 4.5 builds upon the high-quality networking libraries already available in .NET to further enable the development of increasingly connected applications. New support spans from modern HTTP libraries to WebSockets to support for contract-first service development.
Beyond such areas, many additions have gone into improving the .NET Framework end to end. There are improvements from regular expression processing to better support for compression standards, enhanced support for HTML5, developer productivity enhancements in Entity Framework, optimized mobile experiences through ASP.NET, and more, ensuring .NET Framework 4.5 has something new for all developers building for the client and the cloud.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 have something for every developer. The new editor, now using Windows Presentation Foundation, delivers a more flexible, feature-rich environment that supports concepts such as the use of multiple monitors. This enables a developer to have one monitor with code, another with the user interface designer, and yet another with database structure.
Built-in support for Windows 7 multitouch and “ribbon” interfaces delivers stunning applications to end users. For the first time, developers have integrated access to SharePoint functionality into the Visual Studio integrated development environment. Windows Azure tools make it easy to quickly develop, debug, test and deploy cloud applications from within the familiar Visual Studio environment. Built-in support for ASP.NET Model-View-Controller gives developers the flexibility to separately update the appearance and core business logic of Web applications. Windows Phone 7 developers will be able to build amazing mobile applications using Visual Studio with integrated phone design surfaces.
.NET Framework 4 adds additional support for industry standards, more language choice, new support for high-performance middle-tier applications including parallel programming, and side-by-side installation with .NET Framework 3.5. With the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, the size of the runtime has been decreased by over 80 percent, making it easier for developers to get applications, and therefore users, up and running faster.

For Partners & OEMs:
ISV (Independent software vendor) and IHV (Independent hardware vendor) Partners will be able to download Windows 7 RTM from Microsoft Connect or MSDN on August 6th.
Microsoft Partner Program Gold/Certified Members will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English through the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) Portal on August 16th. By October 1st, the remaining languages will become available to download.

OEMs will receive Windows 7 RTM software images beginning approximately 2 days after we officially RTM, as a little time is required to release and distribute these images. This will allow them to begin preparing images for new PCs to ship with Windows 7 on them. We know our OEMs are excited for Windows 7 and we can’t wait to hand them the final RTM bits!
For Business Customers:
If you are a Volume License (VL) customer with an existing Software Assurance (SA) license you will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English starting August 7th via the Volume License Service Center (VLSC). The rest of the languages for Windows 7 RTM should be available within a couple of weeks after that.
Volume License customers without a SA license will be able to purchase Windows 7 through Volume Licensing on September 1st as we announced last week at WPC09. Mark these dates on your calendar and start making your deployment plans!

Developers with MSDN Subscriptions will be able to download Windows 7 RTM in English on August 6th and remaining languages by October 1st.
For Beta Testers & Enthusiasts:
I know there have been some rumors going around about a “family pack” for Windows 7. We have heard a lot of feedback from beta testers and enthusiasts over the last 3 years that we need a better solution for homes with multiple PCs. I’m happy to confirm that we will indeed be offering a family pack of Windows 7 Home Premium (in select markets) which will allow installation on up to 3 PCs.
Beta testers will not automatically receive a free copy of Windows 7. Many beta testers are already subscribers to TechNet; those of you who fit that description will be able to download Windows 7 RTM shortly after RTM happens for free as part of your subscription.
However, if you don’t have TechNet and are waiting for GA (to either purchase Windows 7 or wait for your pre-order to arrive) you can continue to use the RC. In fact, you can continue to use it until it expires on June 1st, 2010 (expiration actually starts March 1, 2010, this is when the reboots start).
We are also going to release an evaluation of Windows 7 Professional for IT Professionals via the Springboard Series shortly after RTM. Over 40% of beta testers are IT Professionals and this will allow them to quickly access the RTM code and plan for deployments.
For Consumers:
Windows 7 will be in retail stores and shipping on new PCs starting October 22nd. If you pre-ordered Windows 7, it should be delivered sometime around the October 22nd timeframe (depends on the retailer).
So get ready to download Windows 7 RTM via Connect, MSDN or TechNet on August 6th.
