How To: Get Windows 7′s “About Windows” Window In Vista

As Windows 7  BETA is very much near the corner, it’s high time to make up your Vista as 7.I have been adding here many new tools and tweaks which help you in transforming your Vista into Windows 7 for free. This post is another add-on to my “Mega Guide: Transform Vista into Windows 7” guide.

This detailed guide will show you how to get Windows 7′s “winver” or “About Windows” Window in Vista. That is, you will get a new “About Windows” window instead of the old Vista one. While many of the Windows Vista users not aware of this feature, “winver” displays the kernel version and other information about your Vista or Windows 7.
To get Windows 7 touch, you need to replace two system files called basebrd.dll and basebrd.dll.mui. Worry not. It’s a lot easier than you thought. Just follow the below guide and get a new “About Windows” panel.
Please backup basebrd.dll and basebrd.dll.mui files before you start this guide.
1. Download the  new basebrd.dll file from here.
2. Just head to C:\Windows\Branding\ and take the ownership of basebrd.dll file (use how to take ownership of a file in Vista guide).
3. Rename basebrd.dll file as basebrdold.dll and paste the newly downloaded basebrd.dll file in this (C:\Windows\Branding\) folder.
4. Once you done with this go to C:\Windows\Branding\Basebrd\en-US and take the ownership of basebrd.dll.mui file followed by renaming the file as basebrd.dll.mui file.
5. Now, download and paste the new basebrd.dll.mui in the same folder, which is C:\Windows\Branding\Basebrd\en-US. If the link is not working please download it from here.
6. After accomplishing all the above steps type winver.exe either in start menu search box or in Run dialog box to see the new About Windows window.
7. Enjoy!
